Compare IronDome with Kickbox API for disposable signup screening: free checks, pricing, detection scope, latency, and a practical migration checklist.

If you use Kickbox API to detect disposable signup emails, IronDome is a strong alternative: 500 free checks per month, then $1 per 1,000 checks without a subscription. It screens known temporary addresses and domains before account creation or trial-credit allocation, with hourly data updates and warm-connection median latency below 20 ms across four tested regions.

Which Kickbox API are you replacing?

Kickbox has two different offerings relevant to this decision:

If your application only reads the disposable flag, IronDome is a focused alternative. Inventory any other fields your signup policy uses before switching.

Why choose IronDome for signup protection?

Detect known temporary addresses on shared providers

Checking whether an address ends in a known disposable domain is useful, but it does not cover every temporary address. A legitimate user and a temporary-email service can both use addresses hosted on Gmail or Outlook.

IronDome screens known disposable addresses as well as domains, including temporary addresses on shared providers. Its domain and address data are updated every hour. You can target known temporary addresses without rejecting an entire mainstream email provider.

Keep the screening call small and fast

IronDome recorded warm, reused-connection medians of 4.84–15.52 ms across US East, US West, Europe, and Singapore. These measurements include network and response handling. The benchmark page includes the setup, tail latency, and fresh-connection results.

Reuse your server-side HTTP client or an IronDome SDK rather than opening a new connection for every check.

Pay for the screening you need

IronDome's free allowance renews monthly. Beyond 500 checks, pay-as-you-go costs $1 per 1,000 checks without a subscription.

Kickbox's disposable endpoint is free. Its separate commercial verification product provides 100 starter credits and sells packs such as 500 verifications for $5 or 5,000 for $40. Those packs buy broader verification, not the same feature set as a focused disposable check. Kickbox refunds unknown verification results; purchased credits expire after one year. See Kickbox pricing and its terms.

Migrate the disposable decision, not the whole response

IronDome's check endpoint uses a server-side POST request with a Bearer API key and a JSON body:

bash
curl --fail-with-body \
  --request POST 'https://api.irondome.dev/v1/check' \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $IRONDOME_API_KEY" \
  --header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data '{"email":"person@example.com"}'

Keep the key in server configuration. A successful response contains provider, valid, disposable, and reason.

Map the decision explicitly:

  • Read IronDome's disposable boolean for disposable screening.
  • Do not translate valid: true into Kickbox's result: "deliverable". IronDome's field means the input passed syntax and normalization checks, not that the mailbox exists.
  • Do not manufacture replacements for sendex, accept_all, or did_you_mean. Remove dependent logic only after deciding those checks are no longer needed.
  • Handle HTTP 422 as invalid email input. A timeout or service error supplies no usable disposable classification.

Keep the submitted email for delivery and verification.

Preserve signup availability during failures

For an availability-first signup flow, allow registration if the screening call is unavailable, but record that screening was skipped. Disposable addresses can pass through during that interval. If trial credits are expensive, account creation and trial allocation can be separate decisions. The trial-abuse prevention guide explains where to place those checks.

Do not automatically retry a timed-out IronDome request: it may already have completed and counted toward usage. Record the request ID and error category without logging credentials or full email bodies.

Before switching enforcement, compare results on representative, appropriately handled signup traffic. Include legitimate controls, investigate disagreements, and measure latency from your deployment.

When should you keep Kickbox?

Keep Kickbox's commercial verification workflow when your goal includes email-list cleaning, deliverability assessment, accept-all handling, or downstream decisions based on its quality score. Those are broader jobs than disposable signup screening.

Choose IronDome when the requirement is fast, focused detection of disposable addresses before account creation or trial access. Start with the 500-check monthly allowance, integrate the disposable decision on your server, and keep your existing ownership and trial-eligibility checks.
