Compare IronDome with Abstract API for disposable email detection: pricing, free limits, response-field changes, and signup migration guidance.
If you use Abstract API to detect disposable signup emails, IronDome is a strong alternative: 500 free checks per month, then $1 per 1,000 checks without a subscription. It screens known temporary addresses and domains before account creation or trial-credit allocation, with hourly data updates and warm-connection median latency below 20 ms across four tested regions.
This comparison covers an alternative to Abstract's email validation and reputation checks for disposable screening. It does not cover Abstract's phone, IP, exchange-rate, or other APIs.
Replace the check your application actually uses
Abstract's Email Reputation API returns several groups of information: deliverability, email quality, sender details, domain details, risk, and breaches. Its disposable indicator is email_quality.is_disposable.
If your signup handler only reads the disposable indicator, a dedicated service gives you a smaller integration. IronDome returns the provider category, syntax validity, disposable verdict, and classification reason.
Where IronDome fits better
Signup and trial-credit protection
A temporary inbox can receive an OTP. Deliverability and ownership verification therefore do not answer whether you want to grant that address a trial.
IronDome identifies known disposable domains and addresses, including temporary addresses hosted on shared providers such as Gmail and Outlook. Its domain and address data are updated every hour. Call it before the signup action or trial allocation you want to protect, then continue your existing verification flow for accepted addresses.
Low overhead in an existing backend
IronDome's published warm, reused-connection median latency ranges from 4.84 to 15.52 ms across four tested regions: US East, US West, Europe, and Singapore. The figures include network and response handling. See the benchmark setup and results.
Use an SDK or reuse a server-side HTTP connection pool. Opening a new connection per request adds overhead.
SDKs are available for JavaScript, Python, Go, and Rust. The API can also be called with an ordinary HTTPS client; adopting a new authentication framework is unnecessary.
Compare recurring allowances and paid pricing
IronDome: 500 free checks every month. Additional usage is $1 per 1,000 checks without a subscription. It is a focused disposable-screening service, so you are not buying an email-enrichment bundle.
Abstract Email Reputation: 100 free requests per month at three requests per second. Professional is listed as one paid option at $39 per month for 5,000 requests. Its plan comparison distinguishes the returned field groups. Confirm the disposable field, other required data, and billing interval before purchasing a plan.
For a focused disposable verdict, IronDome offers a larger recurring free allowance and usage-based billing. Prices and allowances were checked on October 28, 2026.
For other services and their free limits, see the five-API comparison.
Map Abstract's fields to an explicit screening decision
Start by finding the exact Abstract endpoint your application calls. The Email Reputation API uses email_quality.is_disposable. The separate Email Validation API uses a different response shape.
For IronDome, send a server-side POST to https://api.irondome.dev/v1/check with a Bearer API key and a JSON body containing one email string. The API reference describes the full request and response contract.
The migration should preserve these distinctions:
- Disposable screening: map the existing disposable decision to IronDome's top-level
disposableboolean. - Format validity: IronDome rejects invalid email syntax with HTTP 422. Do not expect every invalid input to arrive inside an HTTP 200 response.
- Deliverability:
valid: truemeans syntax and normalization passed. It does not replace Abstract's SMTP, MX, or deliverability fields. - Enrichment: sender, domain-age, risk, and breach fields have no equivalent in this focused response. Keep their existing source if your product still uses them.
Never map a missing field, failed request, or timeout to disposable: false. An unavailable classification and a negative classification require different application handling.
Switch without changing your trial policy by accident
Keep three application outcomes: disposable, not detected as disposable, and unavailable. Map the provider response to those outcomes in one place.
Test with legitimate addresses and current disposable examples, handled appropriately. Inspect disagreements and measure response times from your backend. Preserve the original address for verification.
For an availability-first policy, let registrations continue during a screening outage while recording that the check was skipped. That means disposable addresses can get through unchecked. See the email-check trial-abuse guide for the distinction between registration, screening, and trial grants.
Avoid automatic retries of timed-out IronDome checks because a completed request may already have counted toward usage. Monitor error categories and request IDs, not raw credentials or email bodies.
When Abstract remains the better fit
Keep Abstract when one workflow needs disposable detection together with broader deliverability, sender or domain enrichment, risk, or breach information. IronDome does not replace unrelated Abstract APIs or reproduce every email-quality field.
Choose IronDome for fast disposable screening before signup or trial allocation. Start with 500 free checks per month and keep your existing authentication flow.
